4-H Swine Projects

Have you ever wondered what it takes for a market swine to become a blue ribbon animal? The 4-H swine project is an excellent way to learn about an important industry in Colorado and the rest of the nation. Through this project, you can learn about all aspects of the swine industry, either by caring for a pig or building your own herd.

Breeding Swine

This project is for member’s ages 8-18 years old. This project is designed for those members who want to learn more about the pork industry by starting his/her own herd. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Learn about the pork industry
  • How to identify the parts of a hog
  • Identify breeds of swine
  • Different types of feeds
  • Evaluating different swine animals
  • Exhibit animal on tour, achievement day or at a fair
  • Purchase, feed, and care for animals
  • Evaluate project with leader
  • Learn about nutritional requirements for swine
  • Learn how to manage baby pigs
  • Identifying common diseases of swine
  • Learn about pork production from farrow to finish
  • Gain leadership skills by helping others learn about swine
  • Explore career opportunities in the pork industry
  • Learn about breeding system
  • Design a swine operation
