Have you chased butterflies or caught a ladybug to get a closer look? Do you think collecting bugs is a great way to spend your time? Then the 4-H Entomology project is right up your alley. You will learn about the world of insects and have fun doing it.

Let’s Learn About Insects - Unit 1

Learn More About Insects - Unit 2

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  This unit is primarily for those members who are just starting their collection.  In Units 1-4, the insect collections build upon each other.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Study the life history of one insect
  • Make an insect collection of 10 to 35 insects
  • Pin, label and exhibit insect collection

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  In this unit you will learn how to expand an insect collection.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Expand your insect collection
  • Pin and display insects according to directions in the manual
  • Learn at least six different scientific insect orders
  • Learn how to classify insects
  • Learn about beneficial and destructive insects
 
Insect Habits and Controls - Unit 3

Identify & Community Projects - Unit 4

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  In this unit you will learn to identify insect groups, including those found around lakes and rivers.  You will also concentrate on collecting or categorizing insects in ecological associations.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Make an insect survey about your home grounds
  • Expand your collection to 75-150 insects
  • Study one insect and report on it

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  In this unit you will take insect identification to the family level.  

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Expand your collection to 100-200 insects
  • Make an insect survey of your neighborhood
  • Map the insect situation
  • Construct and operate a light trap

 
Immature & Life Stages - Unit 5

Exploring with Insects - Unit 6
 Jr./Int./Sr.

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  In this unit you will further specialize your insect study.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Make a collection of at least 10 larvae of immature insects.
  • Rear one insect from egg stage
  • Assume responsibility for an insect control program

This unit is for members 8-18 years old.  In this unit you will write about three special activities.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Expand your collection of immature and regular insects
  • Develop special insect collections
  • Provide leadership
 
Advanced:  Exploring with Insects - Unit 7
Jr./Int./Sr.

This unit is for advanced entomology members 8-18 years old.  This unit is for members who have completed all the other units.

Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Develop your own plan for study and experiments
  • Seek out new resources
